Backyard Birds: Red-Bellied Woodpecker

This morning when I went out to feed and tend to my backyard flock, I heard the telltale sound of a woodpecker tapping the tree in our backyard.

Red-bellied woodpecker.

Now that the trees mostly have dropped their leaves, you can clearly see the birds in them. The name of this woodpecker is curious to me, considering his head is red and not his belly.

Woodpecker looking for insects in the trees.

Thanks to my trusty telephoto lense, I was able to capture this guy. A few days ago the wide angle was the winner, today it’s the telephoto.

Red-bellied woodpeckers do not migrate south for the winter.

This little guy kept eyeing me. He was very chirpy to the other birds in the area that were singing their own songs. It was almost like there was an inter-species conversation going on.

Photos from Arcadia

I’ve been writing all day for paying gigs and it’s been raining all day long—hallelujah. So tonight I’m going to do my post in photos.

A bee on a marigold.

A flower poking through the fence pickets. I’m not sure what it is … maybe a butterfly weed, standing cypress or cardinal flower.

Some kind of freaky wasp. It was huge, much larger than a [root] beer bottle cap.

A flag, because it’s Election Day, because it’s advanced citizenship, because your vote counts, because it’s your voice.

Random Awesomeness in Photos

I had plans for a different post tonight … a recipe post. Unfortunately I’m still working on it. I even got up at 5 a.m. today to get all my stuff done and, well it’s after 10 p.m. Just out of gas.

Recently I installed PhotoShop, so I’m learning to use it. One of the exercises is to go through all your photos and organize, categorize and tag everything. So here are a few of the ones I looked through yesterday. Some you’ve seen, some maybe not.

Lucky: that's what this photo is. It was simply being in the right place at the right time with a handy iPhone.
Homemade pizza -- this is what I made for dinner tonight! It was Awesome!
Another shot that says it all about The Arcadian Experience ... my son playing guitar with his daddy. (A photo of my husband is as rare as catching a snipe.) (The clothes line and witch's cauldron make it especially nice, don't you think?)
